There is always strong demand for attractive and innovative jewellery, and this career path can be exciting and lucrative. You might decide to work as part of a busy design studio, or alternatively you may prefer having the freedom and independence of running your own business. If you’re self-employed, you could specialise in selling designs to manufacturers or directly to clients. The choice is yours.
Typical tasks of jewellery designers include discussing design briefs with clients and making these designs a reality either by hand or using CAD software. These specialists also source precious metals, gems and other materials and parts, and use equipment such as soldering irons and jewellery saws to achieve the desired results. If you become a self-employed jewellery designer, you will also be involved in marketing your creations.
Working as a jewellery designer can give you considerable freedom and flexibility, and it offers you the chance to showcase your artistic flair.
Course Levels Explained
Our jewellery design courses lead to the awarding of either a Diploma or Advanced Diploma, depending on which level you enrol at. The different levels are determined by the amount of course content and assessments involved within each module at the intermediate (Diploma) and advanced (Advanced Diploma) levels. Diploma
These qualifications recognise graduates’ capacity for initiative and judgement across a broad range of technical and management functions. Diploma holders typically have personal responsibility and autonomy (semi-independence) in performing technical operations or organizing others in the workplace.
Advanced Diploma
The graduate is able to apply a significant range of principles and techniques across various contexts and functions. Graduates can expect to be involved in significant judgements, planning and leadership/guidance functions that relate to workplace products, services, operations or procedures.
Prerequisites
There are NO previous work or education requirements for entry into either course level. You may enrol directly into the Diploma or Advanced Diploma levels without completing lower ranked qualifications in jewellery design or other subjects.
Note that graduates can expect higher course levels to result in higher potential salary, positions and skill capabilities.
Course Length
The average time within which students complete their studies is:
Diploma Level 24 weeks Advanced Diploma Level 31 weeks Studying jewellery making with ICI gives you the chance to work at your own pace with no assignment deadlines. This means you choose how long it takes you to graduate.
If you want to complete the learning programme as quickly as possible, you can graduate in a matter of months. If you would prefer to take longer, you have up to three years to finish your studies.
Study Mode: Online Learning
Our jewellery courses are carried out entirely online via distance learning. Also called correspondence learning, this approach is ideal if you want complete control over how you study and need to fit your course around commitments such as work and family. You can progress through the course material whenever and wherever you wish, without being locked into a timetable. Another advantage of studying jewellery making in this way is that you avoid the expense and stress of commuting to attend lessons in person.
As an ICI student, you’ll benefit from highly relevant and engaging course material, and you’ll have access to a personal tutor to answer your questions and provide support.

ICI courses are not AQF qualifications. ICI is an independent global awarding body that develops and administers career-related curriculum and training programs. Taking you far beyond simply the theory of jewellery design, they offer you key practical skills and insights that will put you in the best possible position when it comes to your career.
